121: Vibration Stage for Bone Health
Team Members:
Zhu Taoyu, Anne Porter, Emily Magoon
Sponsor: UD Mechanical Engineering: Dr. Liyun Wang
Sponsor Description:
Dr. Liyun Wang is a professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of Center for Biomechanical Engineering Research, and director of Cytomechanics Core of Delaware Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Wang’s group focuses on how mechanical signals such as exercise impact bone health in elderly cancer patients. These patients are susceptibility to age-related osteoporosis and osteolytic bone lesion, a common complication of cancer bone metastasis. Physical activities are known to impart overall wellness and skeletal benefits. Yet, for elderly cancer patients, commonly prescribed regimens—impact aerobic exercise & strengthening training—are often challenging (thus low adherence) or even cause unintended injury. To overcome this challenge, Dr. Wang’s group is testing vibration therapy as an easy-to-perform exercise alternative to promote bone health using mouse cancer models.
