Q: Why did you choose to become a computer scientist?
Lutz: I picked computer science because I’ve always been fascinated by technology and enjoy solving problems. I love the creative aspect of it as well. Being able to create things that people can see and use keeps me motivated to learn more.
Q: What is your favorite course in the college of engineering?
Lutz: Data Structures has been my favorite COE course because of how much the topics you learn in this class are used and built upon in future courses. It is the core of computer science!
Q: Who is your favorite instructor in the college of engineering?
Lutz: Professor Silber is my favorite COE professor due to his blatant love for the topics that he teaches. His enthusiasm about computer science is very contagious and he is always willing to go out of his way to help you learn.
Q: Briefly describe (2-3 sentences) your summer scholar research:
Lutz: This summer, I developed a user-friendly web dashboard using smartwatch data. It tracks physical activity patterns, highlights trends, and connects participants’ daily lives with their exercise levels. It’s all about promoting healthier habits and well-being through personalized insights.
Q: Can you describe some of your independent web development projects (2-3 sentences)?
Lutz: As I learned to code, I developed some fun projects in my free time. One project was a drawing platform similar to an etch-a-sketch, which displayed drawings on a matrix of LEDs in real-time. My current favorite is a mini pokedex website, which provides a short pokedex entry for each Pokemon.
Q: What is your experience with other extracurriculars, study abroad, or other campus experiences outside the classroom?
Lutz: The study abroad program has always sparked my interest, so I plan to be abroad sometime in my junior year.
Q: What is your dream job?
Lutz: Creating software applications, games, or web platforms that change the way people use technology.
Q: What has been your favorite Delaware or Newark experience outside of college?
Lutz: Going to the Delaware beaches over the summer was a great way to relax during our break.
Q: What advice do you have for new students?
Lutz: Try new things! If you feel like you haven’t found your passion, all it could take is one new class or club to find it!
