Q: Why did you choose to become an engineer?

Cordeiro: I’ve always been interested in how things work, or the ‘why’. From a young age I enjoyed taking the world around me apart, just to put it back together in order. As a toddler, I could often be found in the bathroom taking out every bottle I could get my hands on, and organizing them based on size and shape. Later on I would be in the living room, untying elaborate knots in home decorations and figuring out how to tie them back together again. Once I was older and applying to colleges, I knew this continuous flow of curiosity would do me well in engineering.

Q: Describe a research experience you’ve had so far.

Cordeiro: I recently finished an internship with H2Olson Engineering, a consulting firm that focuses on public drinking water. In a few short months, I gained so much valuable experience towards my career: I surveyed well stations, performed water quality testing, drew liquid phosphate conversion schematics in CAD, and assembled plans and specifications for GAC media additions. I even ran a pilot study for a water treatment facility to improve their filtration system. I’m so grateful for all my internship experience; they allowed me to apply and grow from what I had learned in the classroom.

Q: What was the most exciting part of your internship?

Cordeiro: Definitely the pilot study! The water treatment plant’s filter media system was poorly designed, so we conducted research to determine the best replacement solution. Another intern and I were stationed at the plant for just over two weeks. During that time, we were constantly running around: operating the filters, checking for leaks, testing the water quality, and more. It was such an immersive experience being out in the field and getting our hands dirty. I definitely learned a lot from this project and have substantially grown my confidence in the drinking water industry.

Q: What is your experience with other extracurriculars, study abroad, or other campus experiences outside the classroom?

Cordeiro: Besides working as a tutor and an Engineering Ambassador on campus, I’m an active member of the Outing Club and the Environmental Engineering Student Association (EESA). We recently went on a camping trip to Elk Neck State Park in Maryland; It was very nice to get away from campus and into nature for a weekend!

Another experience I have outside the classroom is study abroad. During the winter term of my sophomore year, I studied abroad in St. Croix. On that trip, we focused on sustainability: planting endangered trees on an offshore key and learning about the economic, political and environmental issues pertaining to the oil refinery on the island. This upcoming winter term I will be studying abroad in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where we will learn about international and commercial construction. I cannot wait to learn the basics of construction in a city with so much surreal architecture.

Q: What advice do you have for new students?

Cordeiro: Spend time getting to know your professors! There are so many kind and knowledgeable professors here at UD who truly want to see their students succeed. Don’t ever be afraid to ask them questions. Questions do not make you seem stupid, they instead show initiative and willingness to learn. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to them in class, utilize their office hours! This is a perfect opportunity for one-on-one conversations, and helps with getting recommendations or references.

Q: What is your dream job?

Cordeiro: I don’t have a specific role in mind. If I really think deeply, I want a role with hands-on components, where I’m not confined to a monotonous routine. What’s most important to me is that the company I’m working for has a focus on sustainability and is conscious of its effects on the environment around them. I want to be doing work that is meaningful, and leaves a positive, noticeable mark on the world.
