Q: Describe your experience starting in the engineering undeclared program.
Vicente: Starting in the engineering undeclared program was a great experience! It gave me time to explore my options while still taking the core first-year engineering courses. I also connected with other undeclared students, we shared our experiences and supported each other as we figured things out. Through the EGGG 101 Introduction to Engineering lectures, I was able to learn about all the majors offered at UD. That first semester gave me the space to research my options fully and make a confident choice about my major.
Q: Why did you choose mechanical engineering?
Vicente: In high school, I loved hands-on classes like carpentry and welding, so mechanical engineering immediately stood out to me. When I discovered the design studio in Spencer Lab, I knew I wanted to be part of that environment. EGGG 101 also introduced me to the design aspects of the major, which really solidified my decision. Plus, the concentrations in aerospace and automotive made the field even more exciting for me.
Q: What advice do you have for new students?
Vicente: Don’t stress about choosing a major right away. One of the benefits of UD’s program is that you have time during your first year to figure it out. Use that time wisely, focus on your classes, explore the different engineering majors, and make connections with other students. Those conversations can really help you find the best fit.
Q: What is your dream job?
Vicente: My dream job would be working on a design team in the automotive industry, ideally at BMW, designing a sports car. I’d also love the chance to work on the next generation of fighter jets. Both areas combine innovation and engineering in ways that I find fascinating.
Q: What’s been your favorite class or project so far at UD, and why?
Vicente: My favorite class so far has been MEEG 102 Introduction to Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Jenni Buckley’s energy and teaching style made the lectures really enjoyable. I especially loved working on the toy project. The training and hands-on experience were amazing, and getting to design using SolidWorks was a highlight.
Q: Outside of academics, what activities, hobbies, or organizations are you involved in at UD or in your community?
Vicente: I enjoy listening to music and spending time with friends. On campus, I’m active in SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers), HOLA, and RISE (Resources to Inspire Successful Engineers). I also attend events hosted by the Black Student Union and the Center for Black Culture. Some of my best memories at UD have come from going to these events with friends.
