Dual Degree Programs

Earn two degrees from Delaware’s best universities in one experience

Save time and money on your way to an engineering master’s degree.

By counting coursework completed in your senior year toward both your DSU bachelor’s and UD’s master’s, you’ll be on the fast track to starting your career with a deeper understanding of your field and earning and impact potential.

Not interested in a master’s degree? Consider adding a UD engineering major!

Participate in the HBCU experience you want and work toward the engineering career you need with a second bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program. With an engineering degree in hand, you can sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam — the first step to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer — in your senior year at UD.

What to know before applying

How do I apply to the program? Are there any associated fees to apply? If there is an application fee, can I receive a waiver?

Students should express their interest in pursuing one of the connected degree programs as early as their first year at DSU. Please reach out to Dr. Eric Cheek at echeek@desu.edu., to learn more about eligibility.

Students on the BS/BS track should apply to UD as a transfer student in the fall of their junior year. Students on the BS/MS track should apply to UD as a graduate student in the spring of their junior year. Students may contact Nancy England, nengland@udel.edu, to request a waiver of the application fee if needed.

What are the advantages of enrolling in the program?

You’ll earn two degrees in five years: a BS from DSU and either a BS or MS in engineering from UD. This combination gives you a strong foundation in science and an ABET-accredited engineering degree, setting you apart in the job market and expanding your career options.

If becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is your goal, it’s important to note:

  • A BS in engineering from UD allows you to take the PE exam after 4 years of experience and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • An MS in engineering without a BS in engineering may require 8 to 15 years of experience before you’re eligible for the PE exam in Delaware.

Students are encouraged to discuss their goals early to choose the best path.

I'm a junior already, is it too late to apply to the program?

No, not at all. While there are advantages to becoming a part of the program as early as your first year, sophomores and juniors can also participate in the program. Entering as a junior may require adjustments to your DSU class schedule so that you are on track to arrive at UD. Advisors from DSU and UD will work with you to make any necessary changes.

I have transfer credits from another university. Will these transfer to UD?

Credits transferred to DSU from another college or university will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for eligibility for inclusion in the UD connected degree.

How do I decide between the BS/BS program and the BS/MS program?

Admission requirements will first determine which program you are eligible for. The BS degree requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be admitted, and the MS degree requires a minimum GPA of 3.3. If you are qualified for both you may wish to speak to the DSU and UD advisors and study the curriculum maps of both to help decide which would be best for your future career goals.

Will I earn 2 degrees?

Yes, you will earn your BS degree from DSU and a BS or MS degree from UD, depending on the program you choose.

If I pursue the BS/MS track, will I need to have research experience? Is this a research-based master’s program?

As outlined in the curriculum map the MS is a course-based degree. Students will complete 10 graduate-level courses (30 credits) to earn the master’s degree. Students may choose to conduct research and write a master’s thesis, which is equivalent to two courses, or six credits. Conducting research may extend the time to completion of the degree. You do not have to have experience conducting research to choose a research-based masters.
