Cyanobacteria captured on a 0.22 micron filter in preparation for biomass measurements. This species, Synechocystis sp. 6803, was the first photosynthetic organism to be sequenced. In addition to producing the ubiquitous light-harvesting, green pigment, chlorophyll, many cyanobacteria synthesize a blue, light-harvesting pigment, phycobilin. The combination of these two pigments gives rise to the characteristic, bluish green color of cyanobacteria that allows us to distinguish them from the lighter green algae.
