June 19, 2017 -- Seventy-two golfers took to the fairways on June 2, 2017 at Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Delaware to kick off the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering festivities for UD Alumni Weekend and support the department undergraduate students’ scholarship awards program. Alumni, friends and corporate sponsors from AECOM, Century Engineering, CV Inc., Gannett Fleming, Pennoni, RK&K, Ruggerio Willson, Sabra, Wang and Associates, Saul Ewing, T.Y. Lyn International, and Whitman, Requardt and Associates generously gave in support of the event, as did the University of Delaware Alumni Association. This year’s contributions will again fund four - $500 scholarship awards to the top freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.
"Each year I’m overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our alums and so many engineering firms. Our students are the true winners regardless of which foursome comes out on top on the golf course," said Tripp Shenton, Chair of the department. "We are grateful to everyone for their unwavering support," he added.
Golfers were greeted by alumna, Andi Slane, Civil Engineer, and CAA individual golf champion 2015 and 2016, on hole 2. Andi teed off for each team and players could take advantage of her shot for forward play. There was a tin cup hole, where each golfer used only a seven iron, competitions for the longest drive and shots closest to the pin. A special competition also allowed players to "roll the dice" to attempt to tee off from a position further down the fairway.
Everyone enjoyed a buffet lunch after which awards were given to Scott Rathfon, Jon Hermes, Anthony Aglio, and Steve Sisson for first place; Phil Horsey, Barry Benton, Jason Hastings and Mark Tudor for second; William Conway, Jim Satterfield, Steve Penoza and Tom Banez for third. Hats off to Chance Malkin and Jenna Siegel whose drives landed closest to the pin, and Dana Rathfon and Steve Carl who had the longest drives. Raffle prizes were also awarded to some lucky participants. Adam Weiser was the lucky winner of the UD ticket package, which include tickets to football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, the ice arena, and musical and theater performances.
